Eliminate start programs

This site is a God send, and I know that someone out there can help me. I want to eliminate the programs that load up onto the task bar. I know I have to edit my registry, as I did it years ago, but have forgotten which file to go to in regedit. Every software program I load onto my computer always wants to load at start, and it slows down my start up time.

Please help,

There are a couple places in the registry for startup items.

Check out HKLM\Software\Micorosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Also check out HKCU\Software\Micorosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Check the Startup folder in your Start menu. Services are a different issue; to get to them, right-click on My Computer and select Manage.

Shutting down unnecessary startup programs and services is one of the first things I do with a new computer.

For Services, I used the Safe list of changes.

I always start with the program itself and see if it has an option to Not start on start up. Heck, even many Norton products have that capabilities.

I concur with TwoRails; Check the program itself first (Options/Properties) for the ability to disable "Load program on startup"

Failing that, use MSCONFIG - Startup tab. (Start, Run, msconfig)
Caveat: KNOW what the parameters/consequences are for a program/utility/service before using this (or any method/program) to disable items.

Failing that, (considering the Caveat above) then take the registry route.
