missing icons
Not sure if this is a browser question. This morning, I noticed that all my html type icons no longer have the IE icon attached to them. They are also missing in my favorites, regardless of the browser I use. I am sure it is a simple fix, but I don't know how to get the icon back for the shortcuts in my folders. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did your default browser get changed in the settings area? You can try going to the Start menu and clicking "Set Program Access and Defaults". Click the Custom drop down menu and select IE as your default browser.

Juppy,
I already tried that. Ran all my anti-spy & norton. Restored to a time when all icons showed correclty. The links from the shortcuts work, it's just that the icon is incorrect. |

Okay, try this then. Right click the Start button and select Explore. After that pops up, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options. In that new box click the File Types tab. This is the area that basically controls what program is used to open certain files. At the first of the list though there are a bunch of entries that start out with (NONE). Find the one that says Internet Shortcut, left click it once to highlite it and then hit the Advanced button down below. It should bring up a box that will have a button that says Change Icon. Change it to the IE icon and hit OK. If that doesn't change all of them back, you might have to go on down on the list a little further and find the ones that say URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol and URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol With Privacy and change those icons too. If that doesn't fix it, then I'm out of ideas.

Juppy,
Boy, this must be a tough one. I followed your suggestions. All the icons in the Folders/File Type window already had IE as the default. . I noticed today that a few shortcut icons were now showing up with IE icons. I didn't do anything, they just showed up. I thought it was because I had launched those pages, but that didn't help with all the missing icons. I am still wondering why the icons in my favorites window are all missing. Oh well... Thanks for your help. |

If you are referring to the favicons, they are deleted when you delete IE's temp folder.

I had the same issue a little while back. Fairly annoying, actually.
Try running this tool: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/htmicon.htm
