Windows XP fails to boot

I have XP Pro 32-bit installed on this system which i put together about a month and half ago and after booting fine this morning it failed to boot after a restart. I had to restart the system cause i uninstalled an older version of AVG. After the restart it gets to the second page where it displays all the devices and drivers but freezes on the words verifying DMI data. I thought it could be a hard drive problem so i downloaded a WD data lifeguard for floppy and ran an advanced test which found no errors. Now i dont know what to do next, did anyone ever have a simililar issue or is able to help?

P.S. I must also mention that Windows did start behaving strangely yesterday, Windows would simply hang on boot, it happened at the windows is logging you on screen before the screen i get asked for the password comes up. This happened 2 times and after that it was working fine, i don't know if it is related to this .

I see no mention of anti-spyware programs in your post. My first inclination would be to scan for malware and eliminate that as a source of the problem. You stated you removed an older version of AVG. Did you install a new one?

Run anti-malware programs from safe mode (if you can get it to boot into safe mode). If you are clean of malware (or if you still canīt get it to boot), I would go into setup, set to boot from CD before hard drive, insert your XP CD and try a repair install.

Hey Kev, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately i couldn't do an anti-spyware or malaware scan since i can't even get into Windows. Apparantly i couldn't even do a repair install after booting from an XP cd i had to do a clean install and lost everything that was on the main hard drive. I spoke to friend of mine who knows much more than i and he said it is very possible that AVG corrupted my system after, he said he seen programs do such things in the past, don't know how true this is though. At least i'm back into Windows but i have a lot of work ahead of me since i have to put everything back.
