Windows updates help needed

Guys, i need some help with this, just reinstalled XP Pro and i'm looking to install all the neccessary updates for my system. I was told that it has to be done manually, however i had updates turned on during windows injstall and as soon as i connected to web it installed 1 update, something called Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803). So after that i disable auto updates. Now i want to know what is the best way to download them, should i just do it manually or is there a program that helps people to do it or something and how do i know which updates to download?

Also how do i check if i have the current version of DX 9.0c, it says its installed already but i know its updated all nthe time? And finally, internet explorer, i have version 6, i need to get 7 like i had before, does that come with updates or i have to download it?

I like to update manually, so if something goes wrong I would have an idea what caused a problem. It normally is only once a month for MS, the 2nd Tuesday.
Start>All Programs>Windows Update, there will be a Custom box to check. Critical updates is the important one to get.

At the top of Add/Remove there is a box to click-show updates.
