New OS Software???

Just built my newest machine and can't get windows xp to install? First off the Windows XP is installed on my old computer. Also on the Windows XP Cd it says Upgrade. When trying to install on new machine I get an error like this: Windows cannot read the cd or you are not using a valid Windows Product. My Windows XP cd is not a burned copy it real thing got serial number and everything. Do I need to aquire a full windows xp cd since on mine it says upgrade? Or remove it from old computer first? Any help would be appreciated. I bought XP a year or two ago thinking that it was the full version don't rember on the box seeing an upgrade? Kinda ticked. If i need to go get new Copy of XP should I just get Vista or wait. I really would rather wait on vista due to it being so new. Thanks for any help or advice.

you cannot do a full install with an upgrade copy of XP unless you put in a cd with an older version of windows to verify you have one. Once the XP install verifys you own an older version of windows you can proceed with a full install using the upgrade cd.

You also can't have WinXP installed on two computers at the same time.

I'd buy a new copy of WinXP...I don't plan to move to Vista until the first or second service pack is released..

You may legally transfer that upgrade edition from one computer to another. Are you trying to install it on a new computer that has a totally blank hard drive by booting with it? This should work fine, but as said, you need a CD with a qualifying OS on it ready.

You will pay through the nose for full retail XP. Order an OEM from Newegg or Viosoftware, it costs the same as the upgrade.

If you are taking the old computer out of service, you CAN use your existing upgrade..........just borrow a Win98 CD to stick in the drive when it does its compliance check.

Original Equipement Manufacturer- IE it is sold to stores / companies who make (build) PC's. The support will be provided by the store - not Microsoft - BUT you DO GET all the updates from MS as normal.

With equipment like say a Hard Drive, this means that you get the hard drive - period- no nifty box, no cables, no thing but the drive it self, but then it you are building a PC you have all of these becasue the motherboard has them included. There are no OEM motherboards.

Why the Price reduction? -mainly the lack of human support provided by MS.

Hope that helps

Not true. Intel sells them both ways - retail and OEM.

Well... learnt something new, thanks- guess it makes sense for companies doing thier own custom cases and needing custom wiring / IO plates etc.

Yup, lots of companies make OEM parts - most of the motherboard makers do it. HP use to use MSI mobos a few years back. In fact you can sometimes buy these OEM mobos when a manufacturer doesn't want them.

Of course, same way Dell use to get everything off Intel and then tie it all up so it was never an easy upgrade - they do the same with their nVidia mobos now.

Sorry for the off-topic bit, but couldn't resist.

Dell motherboards are not even made by Intel - they are made by Foxconn. I don't know who makes their Nvidia boards for them though, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are also Foxconn.

Heck, Intel doesn't even make their own boards - THOSE are also Foxconns.
