Monitor Identification issues, anyway to change the number windows assigns?
At my work we have several network operation machines that have three video cards on them and four displays connected to them. The main card is an Evga 7950GT, which solely runs the main 30” display at max resolution. Then there is a PNY quadro, which uses a DMS-59 connector that splits into two DVI connections, these are used to run two 20” displays that are on each side of the 30”. Finally there is a third card (not sure of the make) that also uses a DMS-59 connector and this splits into two VGA connections, one of which is connected to a video wall display, used for presentations and such, the other connector is left unhooked.
The problem is how windows is identifying all the displays, even though they are all hooked up the same, when you go to display properties, and settings, the number windows assigns them is different on some machines, the 30” is 1 on all of them, but then the left LCD will be 3 on one, but 2 or 4 on another machine. And this causes a problem because there is a script that needs to be run and it works on the assumption that lets say the left monitor is number 2. Is there anyway to change the numbers that windows assign to each monitor so they can be consistent across the board? Even if it’s a registry edit or something like that? Any insight on this is welcome, thanks.

yea i hate it when you reattach monitors and they are detected differently than you had them before. to keep it simple i think that you just need to attach them one at a time and adjust the settings between restarts. after you attach the second, make sure that the first is set as primary monitor and go from there. wish there was a less time consuming way but i think thats it? good luck
