Recovery Console Fiasco

Using Win XP Home SP2 on a Dell DIM8200

Referring to MS article 307654, I attempted to install the Recovery Console on my PC only to bump up against an error message that the version of Windows on my PC is newer than the version on the CD that came with the PC.

That error message referred me to MS article 898594 which offered three alternatives to resolve the issue. Alternative three, integrating Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the Windows XP Installation Folder was the only one I could use.

In order to create this Installation Folder it referred me to MS article 900871. This offered two methods to accomplish the integration. I tried Method 1 twice and Method 2 once.

The last step of either method required running an in-place upgrade. Part of that process copied files to what appeared to be a temporary work folder. Each time I ran it, it was unable to find a total of 93 files it was looking to copy, so naturally the Recovery Console installation was garbage.

So, to hall with installing the Recovery Console - I'm done with it. If anyone can offer a suggestion, fine, otherwise ....

My problem now is that on boot, a screen appears with two options: start XP or start Setup (the default). Naturally, Setup doesn't work because it can't find a file, hpt3xx.sys to be exact. I used the System Startup option to change the default, but seeing as how I can't use the Setup option anyway, I'd like to get rid of the screen altogether

Any advice?

Thanks
EdP

Hi,

Try Autostreamer to slipstream your CD:

It's fairly simple. Let us know how you get on.
EDIT: Mybe easier to download from here:

Thanks, mickzer ...

I've seen mention of the slipstreaming concept and apparently it's time I learned about it.
