some questions about servers

I have some questions about Web Server and FTP Server.

When we browse any website, are we actually browsing the Web Server?

When we attach any file or pic in our e-mail attachment or send the files of pics through msn or yahoo chat software , are we actually using the FTP Server?

Pls correct me if i am wrong and would appreciate if you give detail explanation on this.

Regards,

Anytime that the site starts with a http it is a website. Anytime that it starts with a ftp, it is a ftp site. FTP isn't built for browsing so most of the time pictures are on websites. Putting pictures in an email doesn't really use either protocol although most are viewable with a browser.

Ok, but if we are accessing or downloading any pdf or msword file on any website ,then are we accessing a FTP Server?

Do FTP Servers use different ports than HTTP Servers?

HTTP and FTP are just different protocols. A file can be be placed in a directory and can be accessed via ftp or http. Most of the time a file on a website is accessed via http. Sometimes drivers or other software is referenced from a ftp site.

FTP servers generally use ports 20/21. HTTP generally use ports 80(for http) and 443(for https).

For better understanding;
FTP
HTTP

So can we configure a different port on the router for HTTP or FTP Server if we want to secure our website on internet from any perticular people or we can simply change the port on our website to protect it from access of strangers?

Will that be able to protect our website on internet?
