Necessary process identification

I recently purchased a new Lenovo T61, and I am very happy with it, except for the fact that it takes >3 minutes to boot into XP to an unsatisfactory 75 processes. I would like to slim this down, and was wondering if there is a program that quickly identifies what a process does. I would also like to be able to tune msconfig to disable services and startup processes. I also would like to avoid a fresh install of XP, because people that have done that on this laptop have had trouble retaining functionality of component of their machines (volume control buttons, shock protection, etc.).

I know this can be done by googling process and service names, but I figured there might be a quicker way to go about it.

Thanks

Have to look at the processes one at a time...

How many of the 75 processes did you eliminate?
