I built a new machine with XP home SP2 which was working fine. Then the system started acting up and corrupted some window files. I ran diagnostics on the WD drive and found some errors that were then repaired. I then did a repair on XP and the system works again except windows installer 3.1 is not working.
I have tried unistalling and reinstalling it, using the microsoft installer clean up tool, and installing the upgraded version 3.1.4000.4039. So far no luck. I would appreciate some advice to this. Also, I have a replacement drive coming as I am leary of a brand new drive already having issues. Thanks.

Sounds like a possible virus. Have you scanned for those?

Yes, it is spyware free and has it's AV up to date with no errors.
The installer just doesn't work after the XP repair was performed. |

Have you checked services to be sure Windows Installer is started?

I was having the same problem except it all invloved net.framework. One of the newer Microsoft updates scews up the installer and other files. I had this problems on 2 machines and microsoft didnt help or there cheasy forum. So I reinstalled and had the same problems, I found a forum full of people having the same problems but I dont remember the site. I got that all sorted out but now I cant get directx installed no matter what I do...
Theres a program called Dial-a-fix- that will fix the installer and most of the problems. |
