Picture folder ?? in Windows (XP) Explorer

I'll try this again. The original post did not go through correctly and would not let me copy/paste the original text.

I have scanned about 390 pictures and placed them in a folder in windows explorer, with ascending numbering 0001 through 0390. I do NOT have them in the correct picture sequence and as I get time, manually move them into the correct sequence inside the folder. I have not been renumbering them as I go instead waiting to get them all completed in the right sequence. I copy them along the way to an external drive but the problem is, when I leave work and go to work on them at home, when I open the folder, the pictures revert back to the 0001 through 0390 ascending order and do not show as the resequenced order.

Is there a way to hold them into the resequenced, out of order positions until I get the sequencing completed and then I can do a batch renumbering or am I just stuck with this as just the way it works.
