XP Pro x64?
I just ordered XP Pro from my school, and it looks like they gave me CDs and license for XP Pro and XP Pro x64. i was only expecting one (especially since it only costs 15.00 to get through the university). Im installing this on my laptop as a dual boot. Is it true that x64 is difficult in terms of drivers? Should I even bother install it? I have a Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz.

I think it depends on the components you are looking for drivers for. My 3 year old build has XP64 drivers for everything but some people don't have such luck. I'd just do some research to see if you have drivers for everything and that should make things go much more smooth.

My 1-year old build has everything up and running perfectly with XP-64. I haven't noticed any detrimental effects. And actually, 64-bit Windows is a bit more secure as not nearly as many worms/virus can have an effect on it. Laptop support, however, may vary a bit.
Edit: If I were you, I would install 32-bit first. Once that is up and running, go online and download 64-bit drivers for ALL of your components BEFORE you even install XP-64. (I had to do this with my build as ethernet ports are not accessible until you install the new chipset drivers.) If you can actually find all of your correct drivers, then I would say, "Install 64-bit XP and never look back." |

haha well i bit the bullet and installed x64. finding drivers for ANY version of XP is tough for my laptop, but if i go to the manufacturer of the hardware instead of sony's website, I can find stuff. just got the wireless card up and working and that's the most important thing.

I was just coming in here to ask a similar question, so I think it would be best to just add it to this thread.
I have XP Pro x64, and I had heard that it was based off Server 2003. A few of my games wont run on Server 2003 (dont even ask my why ive tried, its a long story), and I was wondering if I would have the same troubles with XP Pro x64? Thanks |

not too sure, usually its drivers that have issue with 64bit OS's not the games themselves, so not sure why it would have problems.
on another note you are best to start your own thread for any problem, as people may not read your question here as they only read the original post then respond sometimes, and this thread looks resolved.
