XP-Pro Cannot reinstall keyboard driver

Computer boots, runs normally until first keyboard operation and then hangs. Device Manager shows Keyboard driver corrupted. Following XP procedures for uninstalling and reinstalling the driver unsuccessful. Uninstall appears to be successful. On restart the install Wizard starts up and appears to be loading the driver but stops with error message-"can't load over a file that already exists" Another anomoly is that the computer does not complete the Shutdown process, starts but never completes. Does the fact that the keyboard driver cannot be reinstalled and the computer cannot be shutdown normally, possibly indicate that the computer is infected?
