System reboot during gameplay

I am not sure whether this is a hardware or software problem or maybe even both. I have run the same OS Windows XP Professional SP1 for years now. I have done some hardware upgrades but this didn't seem to affect the game. When I load Age Of Empires I and start my game my system will just reboot. Sometimes I can play the game for 5 minutes and then it reboots. I used to think it was because my cpu was running too hot so I reapplied new thermal paste and got the temp down and it still reboots. The graphics card i have in there is fairly new and I bought it because my old one died but the game rebooted on my old one too. My specs are a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz Prescott Core w/Hyperthreading cpu, 4x512MB DDR2 PC3200 Kingston HyperX ram, A WD Raptor 35GB HDD 10000RPM, a Seagate 160GB HDD 5400RPM, D865PERL Intel MOBO, a DVD-R/RW 8x drive (not sure of the brand) and a GeForce 7800GS OC AGP4x/8x 256MB DDR3 Video card. I have no ideas as to why the system would reboot everytime i try to play it. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

why arent you runnng SP2 for XP and all the patches etc up to date??

choose custom:
i personally wouldnt use any hardware updates microsoft offer but the critical and software update might as well be installed
just switch off the windows firewall after installing SP2.
i have had similar problems with BF2 crash to desktop, dont know of its a similar problem but whenever i install BF2 or booster/expansions or get any problems, the last thing i do is patch it with the last full patch and that seems to solve my CTD issues.

might be worth patching your game with the last available full patch and see if that helps

also try the latest Nvidia drivers for your 7800

I am running SP2 now and it still hasn't done anything. It has the same problems with SP1 and SP2. I'll try applying the game patch. Thanks.

do u get any error messege when your computer restarts?

Right Click "My Computer"---->Properties------>Advance------>Under System failure------>automatic restart(remove check from automatic restart).

Try to boot your computer again and see if you get any error messege when you work on your computer.

Write that error messege here and we will try to help you out.

Were you having this problem of reboot before upgrading the hardware?

Regards,
