Computer freezes on startup after installing program!

Hi guys,

I recently installed "Avast Home Edition" downloaded from Cnet to check my computer for any virus', etc. Once installed, it asked me to restart my computer, and when it came to the Windows XP loading screen (black screen with windows xp logo and blue movement loading bar), it froze and wouldn't budge. I have restart and switched off my computer numerous times (safe and normal modes) with the same result happeneing. The screen just freezes at the XP page after the blue loading bar moves for about 10 seconds.

Does anyone know anything that i would be able to try? Anyone had this same situation happen to them? Its driving me nuts ad i need to access my computer... :'(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

technical support

Were you facing this hanging problem before you installed "Avast Home Edition".

Are you able to boot into safe mode? If you are then try to uninstall this application or software and restart your computer.

If this doesnot do the job then try system restore which i am sure will do the job.

Regards,

Press F8 to get to the boot menu, and choose "last known good configuration".

IT, please read more carefully - SAME problem trying safe mode, that invalidates all your suggestions.

The same thing happens in all the safe, normal, and last known good configuration modes.

Is this going to be too difficult to resolve? I hope not!

You may have to do a repair reinstall of Windows.

You could use a PartPE or UBCD4Win to run scans on the hard-drive and even remove entries from MSCONFIG - first to go would be AVAST entries.

Hi Negeva!

Can PartPE and UBCD4WIN be operated during the system startup? So are they able to repair/find faults when the computer is started? I checked the website, and it seems they operate from your windows desktop..?

unless i'm mistaken, once you have the ubcd made, just put it in your cd drive and restart your computer. Just make sure that the cd drive is set to boot first before your hd.

you should then be able to run the scans.

Unless Darcinova has the ability to use another computer with the capability to burn an Ultimate Boot CD, looks like the only other way to fix the problem through Windows is to do what glc recommended.
