Outlook Attachment Problem

I am trying to help a co-worker who is having a problem when trying to attach documents in outlook 2003. When he clicks the attach button it defaults to his my documents folder but he has desktop shortcuts to where his files are stored. When he clicks the desktop button on the left side of the file attach window it stops responding and takes about 30 seconds before it displays what is on his desktop (this only happens when he clicks desktop, none of the other button cause this slow down). I looked around a little bit but didn't see anyone else here having that problem. Tried turning off fading/shadows/animated windows, tried larger paging file/default paging file, took CDs out of drives to make sure explorer wasn't loading what files were on them but it has not improved. Please help. Computer has an Asus P5LVM-1394 mobol, C2D 6400, 1GB of Crutial RAM, so it isn't a problem with the computer being slow.

Any reason why he can't just put the documents in My Documents?

He has all shortcuts to different places, some in his my documents folder, on his desktop. Some of the shortcuts go to files on network drives that each have a folder for a given department or person.
