Reformat HP Laptop without OS cd???

Hey guys, quick question for you. Sorry this is going to be a total neub question.

My brother has a fairly new HP laptop which has become bogged down and fairly slow for something with a dual core and 2GB of Ram. He wants me to reformat it, but the laptop never came with an XP OS cd. There is an HP recovery drive on the laptop, but it says it only goes back about 4 months. Is it possible to get his laptop back to it's original XP state by using this recovery drive somehow??? Or am I simply going to have to go by an XP cd??? Thanks for your time guys.

There is a preinstalled utility that gives you a one time creation of recovery media, by the way. He SHOULD have used it the first time he fired it up.
