Computer won't boot up

Hello

First of all I am a bit of newbie when it comes to all of this, but here goes.

I've noticed that there wasn't much space left on my hard drive, but still about 8gb (out of 80gb), but went onto download a couple of programs last night. Anway woke up this morning turned on the computer and nothing.

The lights come on and you can here the fan working but the monitor stays on amber light.
I don't have a manufacturers boot disk, but did sort of get one from bootdisk.com, but that doesn't work. Nothing boots.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Is this a home built computer or a store bought name brand computer? If it's a name brand computer, what is the model name/number?

Thanks Chaz

But I'm typing this from a different computer, as the one in question won't boot up.

Cheers

Open up the case, and read the name and power rating of the powersupply. Also see if you can tell what kind of motherboard it is. (Should be written on the board).

On the hardware side could be many things but easy to check out for a RAM failure, if you've got more than one stick of RAM try starting the pc with just one stick of RAM, then try it with the other or others, just one stick at any time, as a failed stick of RAM will cause the no boot but power on situation you describe.

The other pc you're using to post messages, is the other pc running the same operating system, I'm assuming XP, if so could you try putting your hard drive in it as a slave drive and see if you can access your hard drive OK.

I've took the side off so here goes:

The power supply : ATX400 max output 400W

Motherboard: AsRock ??

RAM: 512MB PC300 CL25 17805 ( ATA 1m 140904-3068 )

I don't have a spare RAM stick to try.

I swapped the wires around from the cd+dvd drives to the hard drive, because I knew there was power to the cd drives, so there must be power going to the hard drive.

Would getting a new hard drive and RAM fix it?

Cheers

With your lack of experience, it may be best if you contacted the company that built it for advice and assistance.

When a computer boots at first, hardly any of the RAM is used. It would have to be completely useless to not allow you to get anything on screen. Did you make sure the monitor is still fully plugged into the computer? Also, sometimes parts of the video card or motherboard can just spontaneously decide to quit. I highly doubt it's a drive. If a drive were to fail you would still be able to get video.

In the end, go with glc's advice. Is it still under warrantee? (assuming there was a warrantee for it)

No it's out of warranty, but thank you all for your advice, I will take it to the shop to get repaired.

Thanks

Andy

I can only speak from my own experience regards RAM failure, I had 2X1 Gb sticks of RAM and my pc failed the POST test which is what I assumed Andy's had done, power on, fans spinning, all lights on but nobody home, no POST beep.
I now have 1Gb RAM and one 1Gb RAM paperweight, but the pc works.

I do agree with glc a visit to a pc technician is best, Les.

Thanks again for everybodys replies and advice.

I used your advice and took it to the shop, it turned out to be the motherboard that was at fault.

I thought I'd update this thread incase anyone in the future has the same problem.

Many Thanks

Andy
