Copying XP between HDDs

I have an old IDE 80GB HDD with Windows XP on it, and I want to copy it onto my new computers 250GB HDD. What is the best way to get the OS from the old HDD to the new one? I want the OS to be able to run on the new HDD without relying on the old one. Any suggestions?

if you're only worried about the os you could just do a fresh install on the new hdd. just start the computer with the os disck in the cd drive and make sure it's set to boot from cd drive first in the bios.

Or you could clone the hdd using some like Acronis TrueIamge or Migrate or even Ghost.

Captain could clarify for me. Are you just upgrading the 80 gb hdd drive to the 250 and leaving it in your current computer or putting the os on a new build with a 250gb hdd in it? It makes a huge difference in how you do it.

Again, if you are only worried about having the OS, you can do a fresh install with an upgrade disk. It will simply ask to "see" an old version of windows first. (Insert any previous version, 95, 98, ME, 2000NT). It will then ask you to place the XP upgrade disk back in the drive and then it will fresh install from there.

If you are trying to transfer your entire operating system (third party programs, data and all), you should use drive image, Ghost or any of the other free programs for creating an image.

Use a disk cloning utility such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost - or use the free setup software from the hard drive manufacturer such as WD Data Lifeguard Tools or Seagate Disk Wizard.

Acronis True Image has a disk cloning facility, just boot with the CD.
