Freeze at loading screen

Hey everyone, i have a computer, Dell Dimension 2400, with Windows XP Home. At the loading screen it just sits there. The loading bar keeps moving but it doesn't do anything. Ive let it go for over a half hour and it just sits there. I'm running diagnostics on it now. Could it be a faulty hard drive? I tried to use windows repair console, but when it anaylizes the hard drive it doesn't do anything. Whats the next step?

What kind of diagnostics are you using?

I would replace the hard drive data cable first.

Do you know what brand the hard drive is? If you do, go to the manufacturer's web site and download the diagnostic utility to test the hard drive with. The hard drive might have bad sectors in the boot sector.
