Smile XP/W2K SHUTDOWN Troubleshooting Ideas

I spent a lot of time trying to resolve a shutdown issue on a new HP XP Pro computer that I finally solved and thought I’d post some links I credit for ideas on solving this issue.

If you have an existing system and this culprit suddenly shows up try these following websites:

Troubleshooting Windows Shutdown Problems
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...-Shutdown.html
Windows Shutdown & Restart Center:Troubleshooting in 15 Steps
http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.php
Startup List identities (for trying to find a possible culprit)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
Smart Computing: Windows XP Startup & Shutdown Errors

Kelly’s Korner on XP (wonderful informative website on a lot of tips & tricks!)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm
Doug’s Windows OS Fixes & Tips (another very informative website)

Now my last posting was my solution.
Background: bought new Hp from Newegg, unloaded a lot of “trial” software, and connected printer/scanner when I shutdown, the system would say: saving my settings…windows is now shutting down… then the screen would freeze up, mouse + ctrl, alt, del, wouldn’t work. The only solution was pushing in the power button for 45 sec to turn it off.
Spent hours disconnecting accessories/cking drivers/system diagnostics/regedit. I know System.Ini disabled got it working "sometimes", but again, something is in there that XP doesn't like.
If you have this scenario, look in you Control Panel>Admin.Tools>Event Viewer>Application.
Look for Userev (there will be a yellow warning) and the event #1500,1517,1524 for XP. Bluntly to say, something is not closing registry/drivers,etc at shutdown.
Go to MS and download the UPHClean program. What this does is close them out so your OS can shutdown. I don’t know why this was a hard program to find nor why MS didn’t attach this in their knowledge database for other search hits for shutdown issues.

Anyway, hope this helps some poor soul who is banging their head over ideas on solving this frustrating issue.
