Many problems with updating xp (first build)
Ok first off let me start by saying this. I have reformatted and reinstalled xp home three times. I have been trying to fix all of these error messages I have been getting. Currently the message I have on the PC am building is "delayed write failed" the data that was lost is C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log. Since I have installed xp I have gotted many freeze ups while trying to install the mobo drivers etc. I am running
AMD 5000+ 1gb corsair xms2 (one stick came DOA) Western Digital 160gb HDD EVGA 8800gts ASUS M32nSLI mobo OCZ gamextreme 700watt powersupply I am starting to think that my hardrive is the problem now? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated thanks. |

Did you install XP on a bare bones machine (no PCI cards installed)? If not, do so. Start with just XP, then load the drivers for the mother board. If all goes well to that point start adding any PCI cards.
Is the hard drive IDE or sata? Check that ram cards are properly seated by removing them and re-seating them in the slots. Make sure all cables to hard drive, optical drive, etc are plugged in properly. Unplugging and reseating them may also be a good idea. I had a similar problem to this about a year ago and it turned out to be a defective motherboard. Not trying to get you worried but the possiblity exists... -Kev

I assume you have a main board with onboard graphics????
Also, had a few problems with my OS drive being sata and my storage drive IDE. Every once in a while it will try to boot from the IDE drive? I had to go into setup and set the sata drive as boot drive. It would boot fine three or four times and then go back to trying to boot from the IDE. Never figured out why... It still does it once every month or so and I have to return to setup to set the boot order again. Don't know if this is relevant, but it was my experience with sata and IDE. |

Update
Ok. I am on a fresh instal now. The drivers for the Asus mobo has this instALL program that basicly installs all of the drivers, chipsets, etc. I decided NOT to use it this time and install each driver individualy.I did NOT install the nvidia firewall and nvida IDE SW drivers. I did not get any problems ups UNTIL I installed the ( I want to say mass storage driver) it was a Silicon Image SATA driver. I got errors from microsoft update site. First I got Files required to use Windows update are no longer registered or installed on my computer.
but this is a fresh install. It has 2 links on this page. Register or reinstall the files for me now (recommended) and Let me read about more steps that might be required to slove the problem. I chose the first link. I come to this {error number : 0x8007041D}. I tried downloaded the microsoft update files burning them to a cd and loading them from the CD. I get the same error. I tried rebuilding? the registry with regsvr32 files needed for updates. No luck. I think the driver has something to do with this I am not sure. btw the system has been running all night and no freezes.I turned off automatic updates and thus I don't get any errors from it not being able to find the files needed to install the updates. I know this is a wall of text but This was my first build it wasnt painless but ive been on this 3 days first was a bad stick of memory now this... thanks in advance. Just checked eventviewer I have about 10 errors which state The device\hardisk0\D has a bad block. I am going to RMA this I guess along with thebad memory. Yeah, if you have the option of returning parts or swapping for another without any cost, that's the route I would go.
Sure sounds like something weird with that mainboard to me. |
