Hmmmm..... So heres my dilemma
Decided to take GLC up on his offer of advice and try and use IE 7.0 since AOL9.0 I THOUGHT was blocking javascript, some way some how. Well, heres how that went. From what i am assuming AOL makes there browsers strong for use of there product, but when I went to click IE7.0 it asked me if I wanted to work offline ... so I thought to myself, if i wanted to work offline, I wouldn't be connected to AOL taking up my house phone line would I? I chose try again and eventually the page came up and attempted to post a bulletin on myspace, which is how I originally discovered the issue.. When I go to post the bulletin I see at the bottom of the screen "Error on page" which means a scripting error on the page correct? I think so. So I go to Safety>Settings thru AOL and what shows up at the top of the browser is Screen Name service which has a javascript redirect I believe and at the bottom of the page it says "done". as if it is done loading This is by far the most bizarre thing I have ever encountered in my decade of being involved with computers. So, just for the heck of it...I did something that wasted a half an hour out of my life. I called AOL Technical Support. Everything they instructed me to do, I had already done. I had advised the tech over the phone "Sir, I used to work for the geeksquad. I know I haven't used your services in quite some time, allow me to inform you what I have already done. I went to Start, right clicked on IE chose internet properties, went to security, set my level to custom and made sure that Active scripting is enabled [even just now double checked and oh my it is!] I advised him of the message i was recieving "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Click here to get the latest flash player." and he referred me to a closed Adobe technical support line. So just for GPs. I decided to hell with it and went to download macromedia again... I went there and waited..............................................waited..............................finally got impatient and did a google search for Macromedia Flash Player 9, and manually downloaded MMF9 Active X. At first it gave me an Error 1904.Module [filepath] failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. So i finally found a patch for that and redownloaded and the error decided to shut up and let it work. So I decided to restart my computer so the effects could take place [isnt that the thing that should resolve every issue?] Restarted computer and go back to posting my bulletin....same issue. So this is what I call PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. It shouldnt be my macromedia Flash player 9 because I know for a FACT its not out of date as I just updated to the MOST recent upgrade which is MMFP9.0 Now... Im tired...but I refuse to sleep until this is fixed and I am able to go about my business and get what I need to get done Heres my system specs IF which I doubt this has anything to do with this what so ever, but I want to be as specific as I can possibly be so I can fix this in a 1,2,3 type of deal. While i wait I will go ahead and uninstall and reinstall my java applets just for the hell of it so I can also put that down as Ive already done it. Heres my system specs DELL I Inspiron 1200 series Intel Celeron M processor 1.30ghz 1.30 ghz, 248mb/RAM Please...oh pleassseeee oh puhleeaaasssseeee help!!!!! Save my fri,er Saturday morning! Friday night is already ruined! |

This is a problem with AOL and nothing else. Everytime I see a machine with AOL on it and using their browser it always returns a script error some where along the line. I can't remember if AOL uses the IE engine or tries to emulate it which causes the problem; though it use to be based off the old Netscape browser many moons ago.
Anyhow, check to make sure that IE is set to AOL as it's connection. Also, make sure "disable script debugging" is checkmarked and "display a notification about every script error" is unchecked; (Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Advanced). Hopefully, those settings wil carry over to AOL too. Also, make sure no other internet security application is the cause of the issue, I've seen some pop-up blockers and 'anti-ad' software cause this issue too. |

Internet Explorer 7 could not be installed. You must restart your system to confirm that any changes to your system are undone. After you restart, follow the "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" shortcut on your desktop to get more information. restarted the system read the trouble shooting guide and just for the hell of it opened up ie...its under 6.0 for right now i believe [atleast thats what it looks like.] javascript is working.... as everything i was unable to do...i can do now. And that my friends is HOW YOU KNOW that your a decent computer engineer. Thanks for the help in the areas you helped but this issue is a CASE CLOSED. Goodnight. Watch the language - masking a foul word with * is not acceptable here.

By the way, your hate is very misdirected. It's not the notebook's fault, it's AOL, plain and simple. I'll go to the library to get on the Internet before I'll use AOL.

Glad to be of assistance.
AOL's spyware scanner is useless - to be polite and use less colourful language to save glc's blushes. I recommend that you either un-install it or remove it's Start Up entry via MSCONFIG; as I don't recall that you can stop it via it's own menu options. My other piece of advice would be to get rid of AOL as soon as humanly possbile or use a router to avoid having to use any forms of AOL software - truth be known M$ is slightly better. |

You aren't going to make me blush - I've seen and heard it all, believe me - but I do have the responsibility to enforce the forum rules.
Can't use a router to dial up AOL, you have to use their bloatware. There's no point in getting AOL DSL because they charge more for the same thing you can get from the phone company. Yes, if you have AOL DSL, you *can* use a router instead of their software if you want. I used to do onsite support for AOL DSL if anyone wants to know how to nuke all the software and use a router. The router must support a MTU of 1400. |

Rather presumptuous of me, I'm so used to seeing ADSL connections these days that I never think about 'old' 56k connections. |
