Thumbs down Ridding Laptop of Extra W2K OS?

I just upgraded a friend's older Sony VAIO laptop from Windows 98 to W2K...but I ran in to trouble when the upgrade install procedure took me around in circles and repeatedly (about 10 times!)requested the W2K Install CDROM back in the CDROM drive, and also did repeated re-boots.

On a hunch I removed the W2K Install CDROM and rebooted. W2K showed up installed OK, but on the initial boot-up, it shows TWO copies of the OS to choose from.

Looks like two copies of the upgraded OS got on both C and D drives. System Information tells me D:\WINNT, so it looks like the actual working OS is on Drive D.

How do I get rid of the partial W2K on Drive C without buggering up the W2K OS on Drive D?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Windows usually has a VERY strong preference for being on the C: drive. In fact I've never seen it install anywhere else. As to how to remove one install, I'm not sure.
By the way does the Laptop have 2 drives on it or is it just partitioned?

If you did an inplace upgrade and it screwed up that bad, it will never be right. I'd save the data somehow and do a complete wipe and install 2K from scratch on a clean drive.

GLC - I think your suggestion is the best route to go--start from scratch. Thanks!

It's been awhile since I've done that--can you point me to a good online guide for those procedures?

BTW, during that W2K update process, I kept getting messages telling me the W2K Install
couldn't find a bonafide OS of Win 98 on the laptop--which is bogus, 'cause I installed a
legal copy of Win 98 earlier on that very same laptop!

Very weird, indeed....

If your Win2K is an upgrade disk, all you have to do is stick your 98 CD in the drive when it looks for the previous install and point it at the CD drive. You do not have to install 98.
