Can I use another disc?

I have somehow lost my xp disc and was wondering if I could use another similar XP disc (a friend has the same version as me, bought at the same time) and using my product key, reinstall windows if need be? I think this is possible, I just need some confirmation.

Yes you can. Your license is not tied to the media but in that product key and as long as the product key is yours, you can use any other media.
