Question SBS 2003/SP2 Backup problem

Scheduled backups to a 40 gb tape drive using the NTBackup app. in our SBS 2003/SP2
system work flawlessly.

When trying to make same backup to an external 80 gb USB drive, the backup nears
completion then generates error message:
"Error: C: not a valid drive or you do not have access"

Logged on as administrator in both cases. Have not be able to find any help in the MS knowledge base.

Has anyone else run into this issue and found a solution?

Run diagnostics on the external and system drive to ensure they are healthy.

That was first thing tried.
chkdsk with repair switch was run on both external and system drives.
No problems reported.
It appears to be a software issue, but I've been wrong about that assumption before.

It could also be a USB issue.

Possibly, but OS finds the ext. drive as soon as its plugged into a USB port
and copy/paste function works normally.

Will continue with tape backup for the time being, but it is so sloooow. Takes 4.5 hrs to
backup & verify 16 gb.

Too bad 3rd party backup apps for SBS cost a small fortune.
