XP MCE on a slow descent...
Hey guys,
It seems like everyone on here has a thread named "XP problem" or similar. Well, my issue is major sluggishness. It seems like every time I log on, it boots up slower than before and takes a long time to shut down too. I've defragged, I've run CCleaner (the file sweep and the registry fixes), done a virus scan, done a spyware scan, checked my processes and still have 30 percent left on my HDD. I just can't figure out what is causing my slowness. It makes it a pain to boot into Windows on the odd occasion only to be met by a mysterious slow-monster. No error messages, and I certainly don't experience slowness in Linux. It is the times surrounding startup and shutdown that experience the worst of it. Spec: AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 2 gigs Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 eVGA GeForce 7600GS 2 SATA HDDs, 1 80 gig (XP) and 1 250 gig (Ubustu). Seagate 7200.9 and .10 respectively. Mushkin Enhanced 550W PSU Asus M2N4-SLI Thanks guys.

Hooking up USB devices can cause a pc to start up slower.
Having a mapped drive to another pc that isn't turned on can really slow down boot up. Did you make any changes to your AntiVirus app that might have started a scan on boot up. New apps that are loading at bootup... Changing your boot sequence to hard drive first can help..

1. Only a USB printer, which spends most of its time off. It has been hooked up for a year now, and this problem has just started developing.
2. Can't even say I've researched what you mean by mapped drive, so I'll assume that this isn't the case. 3. Always has scanned on boot up. It was going quite quickly before... 4. Haven't installed anything new save CFS3, which has no startup program. 5. The problem once booted into Windows. It accesses the HDD right away, despite having it boot the super-multi drive first. Sorry, I know those kinda led to a brick wall. Thanks for the suggestions. |

For grins and learning:
Mapped Drives-> You have a second pc (pc #2) on your network with a shared folder.... On pc #1, you can "map a drive" to that shared folder. On pc#1, you could open Win Explorer and go to Drive Letter J and it will show you the contents of the shared folder on the #2 pc. Can copy n paste real easy... |
