Secure SMTP Authenitcation

I'm not really looking for an answer here. I just found that there is basically no howtos on this so i figured id put it out there for other newbie IT admins.

My company just moved to Verizon FIOS and verizon blocks the use of smtp servers other than their own, so you have to authenticate through them to be able to send mail. There isnt an option in the internet connection wizard in SBS 2003 for secure SMTP, so i went rooting around looking for it. What i had to do was find the SMTP connector in the System Manager > Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Connectors. Right click it, properties. Make sure the Forward all email through this smarthost bullet is checked, and use outgoing.verizon.net for in the text box. Then go to th Advanced tab, and push the Outgoing Security button. Use Basic security and hit the modify button to use your username and password provided by Verizon.

grats! your outgoing email works for FIOS now!

Some Keywords for Google:

SBS2003
FIOS
Verizon
Secure
SMTP
Exchange

You can also change to outgoing SMTP port since they generally just block port 25. Also most don't block outgoing ports for business class setups but for just for consumer class. I am not sure what Verizon is doing on FIOS in business in your area.

How to change SMTP port 25 to another port in Exchange 2000 and in Exchange 2003

I'm connected with AT&T DSL, and they block port 25. I have 2 choices - my web/email host offers a server on port 26, or I can use my Earthlink account, they offer a secure server on port 587.
