Some time ago I attempted to upgrade my explorer 5.5 to 6.0 unsuccessfully. The System setup required a reboot and proceeded to then, after restarting, give me a notification....The shortcut"Resume Windows Update Installation.ink" refers to a location that is unavailable.....the IE 5.5 appears to be unchanged and after closing the notificaton I can carry on as usual. Rerunning setup duplicated exactly the same pattern of events ending in the notification. I'm guessing that the location that is no longer available has to do with the software owner's network and not my network or computer. Unavailable meaning unsupported. So I shall leave IE 5.5 intact for posterity and have installed Firefox 2.0.0.9 that I can un-install in the future , if I want to. But I still get that PROBLEM WITH SHORTCUT notice every time that I reboot my computer. Any idea how I might track down the file generating the shortcut notice? And what to do with the file(s) when I find them so that the botched upgrade can rest in peace. windows ME.

You can use msconfig to stop it from bothering you - just remove that reference from the startup. I'm guessing that you might have something like Windows Washer doing its thing on reboots and it's wiping the temp files or the temporary Internet files.
If you want to upgrade it successfully to IE6, you can prepare a full install, not an active install. You can use one of your other machines to prepare it. I did this a long time ago and put it on a USB key, it's about 85 megs when you choose all available operating systems. http://www.petri.co.il/download_the_full_ie_package.htm http://www.liewcf.com/blog/archives/...one-installer/ |

Truth be known, I don't much like IE6 any more than IE5.5 and since it can't run IE7, I'll just keep using FireFox. I just ran msconfig and deselected the nuisance shortcut. Thanks for the suggestion.

If I remember right, 5.5 was such a change from 5 that most called it a beta for 6, anyway; don't believe there's that much diff from 5.5 to 6.

There may be a time coming when you can't get Windows updates with 5.5. It would be to your advantage to install 6, but you certainly don't have to use it.
