AVG in Conflict with XP Boot up?

I recently installed avg free anti-virus and it works great, the only problem is that when I try to start my computer after it being installed, my computer doesn't want to start. My computer gets to the xp loading screen but just continuosly shows the loading bar going across the screen. When I just tell my computer to start with it's last known good configuration though, XP starts up fine. The only problem is that the real-time anti-virus protection (resident shield) for AVG doesn't work anymore. I've heard of this conflict before, but I'm not sure how to solve it? Any ideas?

Have you uninstalled AVG to confirm it is indeed the actual problem?

Yes, I've uninstalled it, and then my computer started fine. But when I reinstalled and then tried to start my computer, it wouldn't work.

I would re-uninstall it. Run CCleaner. See if they (avg) has any manual uninstall methods, and do those. Make sure after the uninstall to remove any directories left over.
