Dear Forum-
I haven't posted in what seems like ages, so I suppose that could be a good thing... in that I haven't bothered yall for some time. Now to my problem: I hadn't previously touched this system, software or hardware wise in over a year, just updates and virus scans. Well, the other day I rebooted and it hangs at the Windows Logo screen. I reboot, I go into safemode with networking, everything works just fine. In fact, I've been using the system for about two weeks like this, just to get by until I figured out the problem. So yesterday, I back up everything and then first try a "reinstall," using a slipstreamed XP SP2 disk. Everything goes smoothly and then when it reboots, it hangs at the Windows Logo screen again. This morning, I went ahead and reformatted and did a clean install. Same result. Safemode works like a charm. I haven't changed any hardware and hadn't updated my video driver in a long time, so why the sudden issues? If it was a hardware failure issue, then why does safemode work so well? I can't see it being video driver related because I haven't reloaded any ATI Drivers for this since the clean install, it should be running under the default. Oh and my OS disk is from when I was in college, it's a corporate edition that we were all given legally, so I wouldn't think MS would have a problem with that. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Yall have a great week. Last edited by DukeDiablo; 11-05-2007 at 10:50 AM. |

What kind of computer is this? Home built or store bought name brand?
What are the complete system specs? Please list all the parts by brand and model including the power supply. Please list all the background programs you have running on the computer...antivirus, antispyware, etc...anything that would load with Windows and could be causing the hang. Cricket

I put together a system back in 2000.... this particular system retains the DVD Combo drive... and that's it, from the original.
I've upgraded and replaced most everything on it in the last 7 years or so, but I haven't made any replacements or upgrades in over a year. The last being the HDD and the power supply prior to that. The system has zero software on it right now, I just clean installed XP SP2. I haven't been able to load Windows other than Safemode with Networking thus far, and so I haven't put anything on it, even antivirus. I'm running it behind a linksys router and I'm using another system until the problem is resolved. Here is the system as best as I remember: XP Pro SP2 1.0 GHz AMD Athlon Thunderbird Slot-A 768 MB PC 133 RAM, mixed generic ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB Video Creative SoundBlaster 16 ? Western Digital Drives (80 and 20 GB) Toshiba DVD/CDRW Combo Drive Sony DVD-RW Drive ATI TV Tuner Card NTSC ? 10/100 NIC No Floppy, No ZIP Generic Case, Extra Fans ? 350 Watt PSU Thanks for looking and have a good one. |

Well, you could make a Ultimate Boot CD and run diags on your ram and hard drives to rule those out as possible problems.

Will do, I'm going out of town, but I'll check back in when I return and let you know if I... or more accurately, UBCD finds anything.
Thanks. |

I ran the UBCD and didn't find any errors with Memory or HDD, but I'm definitely not an expert in diagnostics. Any recommendations on what additional tests to run?
I did enable boot logging, nongui startup, and sos in the msconfig application in safemode to get a bootlog to post. It seems to hang on whatever comes after amdagp.sys everytime. It looks like a power managment for the mainboard? View Log here: http://www.thekennedycompound.com/St...tlog%20JMK.txt Sorry for the error GLC... Thanks for any additional help and yall have a good one. Last edited by DukeDiablo; 11-06-2007 at 11:30 AM. |

Duke, would you please edit your post, remove all that, and post the log as an attachment? Thanks.

Anyone with an additional idea or suggestion?
Should I just through in the towel on this system and save for a new one? I'm starting to think it's a motherboard going down or something. Thanks for any help. |
