Max Ram for Win XP Pro

Its time to build again. Its 4 years since my last build. Years ago Win XP seemed to have a limit of 2gb ram max. Did MS come out with patches to up the ram limit? With DDR 2 ram prices so low I would like to install 4gb on the Asus AM2 mobo. Thanks.

The 32bit version of XP will only recognize 3.2GB of RAM. You can install all 4GB no problem, but you won't be able to use it all. You'll need a 64bit OS to use a full 4GB.

You can install 4gb on 32 bit XP and Windows will see anywhere from 2.75 to 3.25 gb.

Thanks for the quick replies. Looks like I'll buy 3 x 1gb sticks and leave it at that.

Considering how cheap ram is, I'd go for 4 gigs simply to keep the ram running in dual channel mode. 3x1 will be in single channel.

Ram may be cheap, but not as cheap as I am.
