Need to add printer from wifes computer

If I am in the wrong place please move this. Thank You.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered before but I could not find it using the search feature.

I have two XP SP2 Home computers that I built myself. I have a HP printer on my computer and my wife has a Cannon MP160 scanner/printer on her computer. I would like to use her scanner/printer sometimes and I have tried many times to add it to my computer.

I go to control panel and click on add printer and let the network search for her computer. It comes up with a "Windows Microsoft Network" and I double click on that and it comes up with "MSHome" I double click on that and it comes up with "Becky2"(my wifes printer) and "Gary" (my printer) when I click on Becky2 it wants the name of the printer and there I am stuck. I have put every name I can think of in that box and it still won't work.

I am on Verizon FIOS now but I was on Verizon DSL. My two computers are hooked together with the FIOS 4 port hub. It can be used as wireless or not and I chose to go with wired instead of wireless.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gary

The correct way to add a network printer is - open My Network Places and browse to the printer SHARE - not the printers folder on the other computer. Right click, choose Connect.

I read the instruction book and I spent an hour on the phone with Cannon support since it is still in warranty and found out this printer cannot be shared. Case closed.

What? I've never seen a printer that can't be shared.

The attached snip is a screenshot from the Canon website.

You might call back and ask him which one is right.

Link, you need to type in sharing in the search box and it will give you full instructions.

I have, Les - very few, but some old cheap HP's and Lexmarks can't be shared.

Is that limitations of the driver or the hardware?

Both. Full GDI printers can be touchy. The HP 720C was famous for that.

The only workaround I've ever seen that works is physically move the printer to the other machine, do a full local installation, then move it back and add the correct network port.

Generally, the best thing to do if you want a shareable multifunction printer is buy one to begin with that has an internal print server, and connect it to your router. There's a reason the "entry level" devices are so cheap - they totally lack versatility.

Even if you can get that Canon to share, it will only share the printing function, it will not allow remote scanning. Multifunctions that come with an internal print server allow full use from any computer on the network.
