I'm running a new high end PC with WinXP (system in sig.) I just installed XP about 9 or 10 days ago and when I installed it I made just one user, me. From the first day when I turned on the PC it would boot straight to the desktop without asking for a login name or password or anything which is how I wanted it. Well, all of a sudden, yesterday when I turned it on I got a login box asking for a login and password. My name "Todd" was already populated in the name box. I hit enter without entering a password and then was allowed to my desktop. So I figured that I needed to go into the Control Panel and open "User Accounts" and choose NOT to use the Welcome Screen. Well, that didn't work. I got the same thing with the next reboot. Then I tried again and went into Control Panel > User Accounts and I saw THREE user accounts listed. Todd (me as the administrator), a "Guest Account" which was grayed out and not in use and an ASP.NET account. What the heck?! Where did this ASP.NET user acct come from?! So I deleted it but I still get the login and password box when I boot. This changed all by itself yesterday. I just want to turn my PC on and have it boot straight to my desktop like it did before. Does anyone know what the heck is going on? BTW, like I said I just installed WinXP after a bunch of hardware changes and I haven't activated it yet but still...

You will always get the login box if you have more than one user by default. The ASP.net account is added by default if you install .NET which many programs require nowadays.
This explain it in a bit more detail and how to fix it.

I believe that's part of ".Net (dot.net) and is installed by various software, like ATI's control center.

I agree with the post above. If you install .Net Framework it will always show the login screen. This was also my problem few years back. I tried everything. I just got used to it. No harm done.

Go back into User Accounts, pick "Change the way users log on or off", and put a check beside "Use the Welcome Screen". Might as well put a check beside the Fast User Switching option too.
