If you have the XP cd ( not a computer restore disk ) you can do a repair install of XP.
Instructions here : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522

It is best to disconnect from any networks during a repair install. It can also help to disconnect cameras, Webcams, scanners, printers, usb drives, and other extraneous equipment.
would this apply to my capture card and second hdd

If they're usb yes.
If they're installed as pci card and slave hard drive no.

Please note that you will have to reinstall drivers and updates after a repair install of XP.
And if XP won't update, that was,Microsoft's brain dead stealth install this summer, there is a fix at Microsoft's Help & Support site.

Yes.
You may have a failed cable but we can deal with that later (Unless you've got replacements about, if so, use them now. ).

A 9200 AGP card could be your problem but let's do this one thing at a time.

For now run diagnostic software; memtest and your HD diagnostic software.

Run memtest : http://www.memtest.org/

Then go to the HD site and download and run their diagnostic for your HD : http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/Main/support.shtml

Hold it!!!
No otherwise working computer has trouble with the software you loaded.
Don't add anything more.

The only thing you can do now is confuse the diagnostic.

The software I told you about will from the floppy or the optical, do not try loading anything else.

You have to boot the computer from the floppy drive, put it first in the bios boot order and then
save and exit so you can boot with the disk in place.
You won't be loading XP when memtest runs so if you're still having video problems then the problem is your graphics card.

What, exactly, do the error messages say when they tell you the drivers haven't loaded.

ati control panel failed to initilaze because no ati driver is installed, or ati driver is not working properly. the ati control panel will now exit

2nd one isnt an error its for HydraVision
ati's desktop manager is being unloaded because an ati display driver is not running.

then I have an option to revert to default settings . When I select reset it does nothing, it also says I can remove ati display driver in ad/remove programs in control panel. But control panel wont open up.

I'm reviewing your actions here so we can be sure we're on the same page.
Following the instructions in the link you successfully did a repair install.
Since then you've been unable to :
1. go on line with the computer
2. Reinstall the necessary drivers and get the XP updates
3.Control Panel, no longer functions

Can you get to My Computer?
If so do this :
Quote:
1.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2.
Click the Advanced tab.

3.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4.
Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5.
Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot.
You will have to redo your internet connection on that computer but first we need some idea of what's going on and that will let us read the error message.

OK got it.
Here's how to repair Internet Explorer so you can go back on line with that computer : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3183...d=2073&sid=186

Once you can get all the updates and your drivers.

Disk failure means your hard drive is fixing to go south.
You can run disk error check : Right click on the drive in My Computer chose Properties> Tools, chose error check, and reboot.
You can chose repair errors if the disk is developing bad sectors this will give you some time to save what data you want .
If you have to get data off of it the less you do with it after the error check the more likely you are to get that data back..

That's too long for newegg, I think their policy runs for a year, you'll have to call/email the drive manufacturer and follow their instructions.
They may want you to run their diagnostic as well ( downloaded from their site).

I've been following your problem and I noticed this online reference to SHRegGetValueW when you try and launch Internet Explorer
http://archives.devshed.com/forums/c...w-1932351.html

I was wondering what version of XP you had on your pc before the repair and what version was on the cd you used for the repair.
Had you upgraded your original operating system with ms updates to sp2 and Internet Explorer7 and tried to do a repair with the original xp cd rom without any service packs.
This ms site explains possible internet problems with a repair install when ie7 is installed.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

Adaware2007 runs as a service did you stop this service running before uninstalling adaware also did you get any message when doing the repair install about setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the cd.

As you seem to be near to getting a new hard drive and reinstalling XP maybe this doesn't matter but just thought I'd mention it, good luck anyway.
