I have noticed for the past 3 days my CPU Usage has been at 100% Using XP Pro.
I ran some ad ware software to find all the junk (spy bot and Ad-Aware) but I am still pinned at 100% cpu usage. Anyone have any ideas how to find out what is running? I don't see anything obvious. Please see attachment Thanks Last edited by sjm1027; 12-02-2007 at 08:39 AM. |

Open task manager and click on the processes tab and watch it for a bit and you should easily see which processes are taking up the cpu time.

So, when you view the processes tab for awhile those 2 are the ones that you see taking all the cpu time up?? What user name are those 2 showing? Those are normal processes and I have them running on mypc, but they don't use up any cpu time when I am idle and just watch the task manager for awhile. In fact I have 5 instances of svchost.exe but they are sit idly by. I don't have any further insight as why those 2 processes may be acting that way on your PC so hopefully someone else will be along to assist you further.. Try going to the run box, and typing msconfig, and then click the startup tab, and laet us know how many things are checked in there, and what they are.

Thats way too much stuff in the startup folder. I keep my PC with 0 items checked in the startup tab. Some of those especially the ones with no name are pretty suspicious. Have you checked for viruses and spyware lately?

Agreed. Whack the stuff you don't need, and that alone will go a looong way.

Has anyone here used AntiSpyware® 2007? Seems a little fishey, I down loaded it and I got a list of 130 things it found but won't fix them until you pay. I already ran spybot and am surprised it found so many in a very quick time???
http://antispyware.com/index.php Is this company on the up and up? Do you think it will help with my problem? Next question! If I shut all the items shown on my msconfig startup tab will that mess up any programs I am running? I am not a computer guru so I am sounting on your help to tell me to do the right thing Appreciate all your help Thanks |

How did you come across these guys?
You don't necessarily want to whack everything on that menu. It all depends on what you use. I'd suggest you go through and google each process to learn about it, and then find out if you want to get rid of it. I'd tell you which ones you are safe with getting rid of, but I don't know your usage, and you'll learn more that way. Feel free to ask more questions as you go. I dunno, there are others out there that can be trusted. This does look legit (though it sure promotes itself with a lot of useless stuff). Go for AVG Free, AVG Antispyware, Avast!...programs like those. Spybot S&D is also quite good.
