Replace motherboard without repair.

I have a friend who got a new motherboard and Celeron 1.1 CPU. Is there any way to change the motherboard over without having to repair?

Getting a mobo that is identical and or real close to the original one would help.....

Indeed. Without that, you're almost guaranteed to have to run a repair install.

Also, stick with the same processor type.... IE don't try to jump from intel to AMD, if you do that, you'll almost be forced to do a clean reinstall.

Well the whole idea was to upgrade the motherboard to cope with faster processors, so getting the same mobo is pointless. Both motherboards support Intel processors, although we are moving from Pentium 3 to Celeron (came with the motherboard). They both have Intel chipsets and according to them (Intel), both the 440BX and 810E use the same drivers. Is there any way to increase the chance of not having to do repair/reinstall?

I put in in there because this is to do with Windows XP. Also the description of that forum is "All OS software and hardware issues", I thought that would be the best place.

I stand corrected. I'll move it back.

If your friend is using WinXP, this was posted by glc in the Tips and Tricks forum: I'm going to add something here - this has worked for me and saves a lot of time. If all you are going to do is swap out a motherboard or move a 2000 or XP hard drive to another system, try this.

Before shutting down, open Device Manager. Open up the IDE controllers, you will see one or two busmaster controllers. Double click on them and find the Update Driver tab. Do not search, select pick from a list. You will see Standard Dual IDE Controller. Use that one. Doing this will allow the system to boot without getting the usual INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE bluescreen.

This is the key to get it to boot. Of course, it would be a very good idea to uninstall the drivers for all components that will not be making the move."
