Permissions Error?

Howdy all

This is a bit of a mystery to me. I somehow managed to end up getting about 6 different viruses at once on my PC. Having gone through the usual sort out procedures I thought I had managed to rid myself of them.

First side-effect that I immediately noticed was that iTunes stopped working. I get a message stating that "The iTunes library.itl file may be locked, or on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

The reason I am posting this in here is that having attempted to run Msconfig and change my settings I was then informed that "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

What is that all about???? I am quite clearly the Administrator of my own home-PC!!

I have no idea what has happened but if anyone can suggest any fixes or offer some assistance I would really really appreciate it!!

Many thanks

J

I get that too on both of my PC's when I set them to Diagnostic startup. It's nothing to do with a virus, just msconfig trying to change a necessary service or something.

I get the error no matter when I try it though. It's almost as if my user security permissions have been corrupted. Is there any way I can check the user accounts on my pc?

Anyone have any ideas please?

Are you logging in as the Administrator or another account with admin rights?

I don't actually have more than one user account set up so by default I log in as the Administrator. I've not had any problems like this prior to getting the virus(es).

It worries me that I can't change my services as well.

That's usually the problem with running as an Administrator (or a user with Admin rights) on a daily basis .. it makes your system more vulnerable as you always run at elevated rights.

Are you sure you've got the virus? Did you get a second opinion from online scanning services like housecall etc?

Have you tried using the services console? Start > Run > services.msc

Addendum: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm for BlackViper's service list.
