Windows Installer "Preparing to install" problem
Each time I attempt to use Start>Search, Windows Installer opens up and says "preparing install", but nothing happens. I click to cancel, but box keeps opening up. This box also opens whenever I click on a Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition program. These were pre-loaded on my PC, but the Office 2003 installation disc didn't come with it. I cannot access these programs anyway. Was it a free trial period after purchase? It's like they're there, but they're not there either. I don't need them. Should I try to uninstall what's left of Office Standard Edition and see what happens? (Windows Installer Cleanup Utility didn't do any good)

"Preparing to install" issue
Ah, persistence. The key was viewing the Event Log, where I found a slew of MsiInstaller warnings, all related to Microsoft Office. (Computer Management> System Tools> Event Viewer> Application) Now I knew what to look for. Went into Add/Remove programs, found Microsoft Office 2000, clicked on Change> Repair Office. Subsequent Reinstall/Repair of Office 2000 removed all "Preparing to Install" popups.
