Windows XP transfer to new pc

I don't know if this is the right place for this post or not. But it's about building a new pc, and then taking the hard drive from an old pc and putting it in the new pc expecting to boot into windows xp. I don't think that you can do that can you? If not, how can you get the old programs from the old hard drive onto a new hard drive with a new install of xp on the new machine?

Look at post 3. I believe after that you will have to do a repair install once you connect the hard drive to the new mother board.

Thanks for the reply. I read post 3, but I don't really understand it. What I'm dealing with is either replace the motherboard and processor in a machine that won't boot or build a new machine. The motherboard has probably been discontinued, so if I were to install a new motherboard and processor and install xp on a new hard drive.....I can get that to work, but how do I use the old hard drive and information on it with a new processor and new motherboard?

If i'm reading it correctly, before you move the hard drive to your new machine so it can be the boot drive you will need to uninstall the drivers. Uninstall all drivers that will no longer apply.

Then when you put the hard drive in the new machine (connect to a new mother baord) you will do a repair install, and that will install the correct drivers.

If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.

That's the way I read it too, but I can't uninstall the drivers or open device manager, because the machine won't boot.

All you need to do in that case is do a repair reinstall. It will take care of itself.
