Windows XP Startup Error on New PC

I have recently built a new pc, and it used linux fine. then i got my hard drive reformatted and windows Xp installed (done on another pc). When I attatch this to my pc and start up, for a split second it shows the windows XP logo, then for another split second shows the blue error code (too fast to get the error code), then it restarts, nd keeps doing the same process.

PC Specs:

ECS 651-M Motherboard
1.7GHZ CPU
512MB Ram (2X256MB)
40GB Hard Drive
dvd writer

No other hardware installed currently apart from keyboard and mouse

Any help with this matter would be much appreciated. Thanks, :

Try to catch a bit of the error code at a time, but before that, try one stick of RAM at a time. If only one works...well, there is your problem.

You mentioned that Windows was installed using another PC. Do you have the same exact specs or not? If not i suggest you need to reiinstall Windows using your computer. This is basically driver problems since you have different configurations.

Ditto to starting over. You'll have to at least do a Repair Install of XP..

Thanks hitchface, but the ram isnt the problem, i switched them around and still the same problem. The code goes way to fast for me to catch it, it was too fast for my camera to capture it as well! it starts, then says updating pool, then comes up with a screen which has the options of starting windows normally or with safe mode etc, so i press normally, the screen goes blank, windows logo shows up for s plit second then the error code. Am I able to do a repair installation from any of these steps, or do i have to do a clean install? Thanks,

To do a repair XP install, you boot from the XP install disc. One of the first things it will ask is to do a clean instal or repair. I would do a clean install so that all the old drivers are gone and the new drivers for mobo and video installed on a clean system.

so I have done that, and it gets to the part where it restarts to load the rest of the files, but then it keeps booting from the cd! I changed it to slave under the bios, that didnt help, so i unplugged the cd drive upon restarting, and it says disk boot error. Im guessing it has to be booted from tha hard drive for the installation to carry on? How do I make it boot from the hard drive? For the IDE Connection, i have 1 cable that has to connections, the hard drive is connected to the connection closest to the computer, and th cd drive furthest away. Thanks,

The CDROM should really be on the secondary IDE channel. The BIOS boot priority should be CDROM then HDD. When it reboots it should say "Press any key to boot from CD...". If it boots from the CD automatically, put the CDROM on the secondary IDE channel and set both HDD and CDROM as master.
