PS: i notice comput often locks up if i try to navigate to another site while these "addds." are loading. xp firewall and a spyware program (spybot) activated and do not help! What type of anti-virus program are you running? Sounds like you need to do a full system scan. I'd reboot into safe mode, and then run your AV app to see what it finds.
As far as blocking ads, I installed the Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox found HERE. It will load a pre-defined set of known advertising addresses, and then prevent them from loading. It updates that list automatically on occasion, and you can always add others to be blocked.

But boot into Safe Mode first... This will better allow AVG to find something that may be hiding itself while active. You can also boot into Safe Mode with Networking, so you can go online and do the Housecall scan at TrendMicro. Run both it and AVG to be sure you've rooted out the problem.

If so, then yeah, I'd definitely do a scan (wouldn't hurt to do one anyway).....especially if it's hijacking your homepage.
