locked out of system

Friend just brought me his laptop running Windows XP Pro. I set this laptop up for him and had him logged in as System Admin. He appaently has logged off because when restarting laptop it does not come up with the usual screen where you can choose user. Since there is only one user, the admin. The normal screen which is blue has two icons one with his name and one with guest. But that is not what he is getting, he is getting a black screen with a log on with his name, he types in his password it takes him to his screen but most of the programs he is locked out with no access. I went in removed his password off of his system admin account. Now we are completly locked out.

Where do I go from here

Thank You Ken

I haven't tried this myself, so can't attest to whether it works.
