virtualized image of hard drive

i was working on a computer that i made an image of using DriveImageXML. The owner has been running their computer for about two weeks now and is just now remembering something she needs to get to in the computer. I know I can browse for files, but i can't get to it that way. I am running VMWare Fusion on my mac. Is there any way for me to run that image inside of fusion?

any help would be greatly appreciated

DriveImageXML only works on Windows. So unless you make a VM of XP on your Mac and go from there the next best option would be to install DriveImageXML on your clients machine and get the files from there.

i have a vm of xp on my mac already, and i already have the DriveImageXML Image off the client machine. what i am trying to do is turn that image into a vm that i can run. i don't need to browse the image, i need to actually run it.

thanks

Then no, that's something you can't do. I don't even think you could convert it and then run it -the host machine will have to be exactly the same: hardware and partition size.

If she's only after files then browse and give hand them over.

she's not after the files. she needs to find a few settings in a program she uses (Pampered Chef's software). and VMWare makes a program called Converter that will take images or physical disks and turn them into a virtual machine, although they don't support DIXML images (Ghost, Backup Exec and Save and Restore images are supported). i have run it on physical disks and it works great. just trying to not restore the image, thats all. i guess i will just have to restore it.

Why not browse the image and see if you can re-cover the settings; many programs store their settings outside of the registry. So, check the Program folder and/or the Application or Local Settings folders under Documents and Settings folder. If the settings are there you can just copy and over-write the files - I've had to do this for an accountant customer of mine and his Sage settings/backups.

thanks, i tried that already. its not the end of the world to have to restore this. i was just looking for an easy way out, and perhaps a way to do this again in the future if it came up. i save images for people for awhile, and i have had to restore them in the past, and i was hoping to make the process a bit easier. its not that big of a deal, though.

thanks for your help

No worries. I use Acronis TrueImage for all my image needs. It's relatively cheap and you can actually mount the image as you wanted to. The recovery disk will work on any machine so, you figure the rest out
