problem browsing mp3 folder

so recently whenever i browse my mp3 folder i get a strange problem. The first set of files that fit on my screen load just fine and pretty quickly. However i start to scroll and then the problems begin. It will slowly load the other files, taking its time to load the icon. I do have it on details view however it does it on any view.

thats whats going, i have no idea how to fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Have you defragged your hard drive lately? How full is it? How many files are in that music folder?

sorry,

i have defragged the drive, multiple times.

drive has 186 gigs free.

there is 6153 files in the folder.

I never did this before with nearly the same amount of files. I moved the folder to a SATA drive then it started doing this. I moved it back to my IDE drive 300 gig and it continued doing the same. I initially thought it was the sata drive for some reason.

Way too many files for a single folder. Create subfolders and selectively move.

Explorer cannot handle large numbers of files - one of it's many drawbacks. This problem is caused by the NTFS streams having to be read; these supply all the extra details about files (names, size, author and so on.

The bets option is to do as glc states. Create folders within folders, trying to keep to only a few hundred files in any one folder at a time. Another, though less elegant way is to use Windows Classic Folders. However, it doesn't always work.

I reduced it to 2,000 which it had no problem handling before and it's still the same thing. Any other ideas?

Change the view from "Details" to "List" and see if that makes a difference.

You icon cache is probably too small. I used to have a program to change that but can't remember what it was...

Explained here: LINK

@ drojah, you state this problem has only recently occurred. Have you installed any of these desktop search tools recently? That might explain a thing or two.

i changed the icon cache, and still the same deal. It doesn't act like it's taking time to read the file itself the names are there as well as the size. It's just the icon takes awhile. It's the standard winamp icon.

As far as desktop search tools no I haven't installed anything of that nature.
