I am using IE 6.0, Windows 98 SE, Pentium II 166 MHz. I realize this may be a WWW Forum issue, but it seemed more Windows/OS-related, so I am putting it here.
Often when trying to load a page that has graphics, IE 6.0 completely locks up. The frame is still there, but the inside of the window is hollow (graphics from any previous page or program remain.) If I click another icon down on the task bar to expand another (previously running) program such as Outlook or MS Word, then subsequently clicking on the IE icon down on the toolbar fails to expand the IE browser window. The really frustrating thing is that I CAN'T CLOSE the browser to try again. I also cannot back out of the problem page. To attempt to close, I right click on the browser's icon on my bottom tool bar and click "close." This does nothing. I finally do CTRL-ALT-DEL, and click "End Task" for IE. This either does nothing, or gives me the second pop-up asking me if I want to end the running task now. I click "End Task" and the screen just goes blank. Ultimately, after waiting for several minutes and the screen never coming back, I am forced to manually power down the computer and start all over. I often (many times daily) delete ALL off-line content (Temp Internet Files), so that isn't the problem. Any help would be appreciated. |

Tom,
first off there is no Pll 166Mhz so I think this is a typo - if this is a 166 then you should go back to IE5.5 or add alot of RAM to your computer .. Look here this may helps http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=18505 and read through the entire messages - it's to get your system cleaned up and I think this is the problem of your computer..

Thanks (as always!) I will try your suggestion. By the way, I just downloaded CPUz and found that, you are right, my CPU is not 166, but 233 MHz! Thanks again. |

Thanks for the reply. I followed your advice and went to the previous post you had done, also reading the entire section. I followed each step carefully. The same problem still remains. My PC is much faster and I like the clean start-up and desktop (good side benefit!), but IE 6.0 still locks up, and locks up my computer. Again, when I go to certain sites, I just get a hollow browser frame, and it cannot be closed. Any other suggestions would truly be appreciated. |

I would be interested - how much ram you have on that particular computer and what kind of behind the scene programs are running..? |

Thanks for the reply. I have 64 M of RAM, and I am running very lean as far as background programs. I used msconfig>startup to set the start-up programs to only "Windows Critical Updates" and "ScanRegistry." Actually, I finally broke down, paid the $35.00 and called MS. As it turned out, my IE 6.0 had some troubles. It took almost 2 hours on the phone to fix it. If anyone else has this problem (I hope they don't) it can get very involved. IE would not "fix", so I uninstalled IE and then re-installed W 98 SE to get back IE 5.0. Then I re-updated to IE 5.5. But... That threw my Outlook 2000 into a tizzy, and I had to repair some issues with it. It also changed ALL of my default settings and preferences, and I am still resetting those. In short, be careful loading IE 6.0!!! Back-up everything first, install IE 6.0 (if you must: I am still running 5.5), and then test-drive it for awhile. Anyway, thanks again for the help. I'll let you know if all of this had any other fall-put. BTW Hpro, my computer does run faster since I did the clean-up from your other post! (Except my Windows Explorer slows down sometimes, but I think this is a result of the other trouble I had.) Thanks again. |
