switching XP to another computer
Building a new computer, and will be not using a computer with a current edition of Win XP on it. Can I just switch the activation to the new computer, or do I need to do something more exotic top use the XP on the new computer? TY

You should be able to install and activate no problem. There is a small chance that you might have to call to activate but I doubt you will have to do that.

Also depends on what version of XP it is. If it's an OEM version, that's supposed to be tied to only one machine, ever. If it's the full, store-bought, boxed version, then yeah, they'll probably let you transfer it.

The retail product can be re-used and activated without (generally) issue; though sometimes activation via internet can fail and so too if the version you're trying to activate is newer (ie, updated) - example, if your XP CD is SP1 and you upgrade to SP2 then activate via internet it will fail so you'll have to ring the free-phone number to activate it.
As, to the OEM version. You can sometimes activate it via telephone if you explain the 'old' machine died and this is a new machine to replace it. This is sometimes hit and miss and you might have to call a few times to get a sympathetic M$ agent. Note, only one licence per machine so you must un-install from the old before doing this. |
