No shut down
I am operating Windows XP, SP2. Just recently when I try to shut down my computer, I get stuck with the screen message " Windows is shutting down", but it doesn't, it just sits there with that message on the screen and I have to turn off at the mains supply switch.
It doesn't do it all the time, but appears to be getting more frequent. Advice would be much appreciated. |

how long do you need to wait ?
do a control alt del and see if there is a program that is locked up and not responding, that could do what your describing |

I would also just try cleaning the system up a bit. Defragment your hard drive, run ccleaner to get rid of some stuff.

Thanks for your responses folks, cleaning up my system is something I do regularly and I doubt that is the cause, as for Ctrl-Alt-Del, when the " windows is shutting down" message is displayed the keyboard is not a functioning item.
From reading Cricket's link it appears there are numerous possible causes for my problem, so I think I will have to read it in detail and spend time trying to identify the cause. I shall let you know hopefully when I resolve the problem. Once again many thanks for your help |

Shut down problems are very hard to diagnose. Often it's something that happened "a while" back, like a program or utility that didn't uninstall correctly, or a new program that messed with the settings of another program in the registry.l I take it you've run stuff like CCleaner and the like, so another thing to look for is services running that shouldn't be and dll's running for old stuff, and the like.

If you are savvy at all you have probably already checked this, but XP is very particular about shutting down with a disk in an optical drive. Make sure there are no disks inserted...

Hi folks, I just remembered I said I would let you know how I solved this problem. Very simple really, I had unplugged the modem usb cable from the rear of my computer and plugged it into a powered hub, that's when the problem started.
I plugged it back into the computer and it works perfectly again. |
