quick question

would my copy of windows XP sp2 from my dell computer work with my new computer? im currently using it right now but i was wondering if i can use it on both computers or transfer it to the newer one? i still have the COA or w/e key on my dell computer.

Nope. This question has been answered many times on here - that copy is part of that Dell machine. You may NOT transfer it to another pc. You will need to buy another copy.

okay thats a sad thing to hear now that i have to buy a new OS...
i have a question though, if I reformat and reinstall the OS on my dell computer and take the HDD and put it in my new computer, would it work?

You just essentially asked the same thing. A Dell OEM copy of Windows is ONLY licensed for use on a Dell computer. Period.

Even if you built two machine and installed windows with one mobo and then switch that HD to another mobo with the same windows installation you would have to format and reinstall.

Unless the motherboards have identical IDE/SATA controllers or you do a repair reinstall.
