ME to 2K
My server with 2 hard drives in a Raid 0 level operates with Window ME. (yep, you read that right) I would like to upgrade it to Windows 2000 Professional. Should I expect any problems? Other than data from 3 other networked computers, it is used only for writing to and duplication of CDs.

An in place upgrade won't work.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272627 Start from scratch, and it will be a GOOD move in my opinion. |

I'd do a fresh install...But for what's it worth, I had a one year old Dell that came with ME. Was going to do a fresh install to Win2k but said what the heck....I did an upgrade instead and it worked well. Your mileage may vary

Thanks Old-Timers
. The raid-0 drives are partitioned into 4. I hope I can format "C:" and not mess with the other partitions containing lotsa data. It seems lately I've forgotten any & all I once knew.Hey, one more thing, if I may. I just ordered parts for a rebuild. I planned to run with a big SATA drive only. The mobo manual says that to use SATA I must first install W2K w/SP4. Does this mean I cannot use my W2K disk (was used originally in the computer I'm rebuilding) to install to the SATA drive? I'm sure my 2002 W2K disk does not have SP4, but it will have to be downloaded. |

It's easy enough to slipstream SP4 in and burn a new CD. That's what I did with a Win2K original CD.
http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_...pstreaming.htm You will also probably need a floppy with the SATA drivers on it. Make sure your new motherboard supports Win2K. |

Well, I've got the new i386 slipstreamed file. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. Can I burn it to a CD and interchange with my Win2000 CD during installation?
Being it references it in the manual, I'm sure my new mobo (on the way from Newegg) will accept W2K. It's ASUS M2N-MX SE AM2. Thanks once again George. You always come through. |

Read the whole article - it addresses how to burn a new CD. You don't interchange - when you are done the CD you will have is a full bootable Win2K with SP4 install CD.

I read the whole article. Why do I have to mess with .iso files? Can't I just do a Nero burn using all the files on my old W2K disk except the i386 folder and add my new slipstreamed i386 folder?
Sorry so late with a reply. I was out of town over last weekend till yesterday. |

There is more to a bootable CD than just the files. There is another way to do it, but it still involves messing with an iso, and you *will* need Isobuster. It also only covers full Nero 6 and Roxio 5 or 6.
I actually used the following procedure - written for XP but it does work for 2K: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp |

I had probs with that. Still can't get the disk to boot. I only have Nero Burning Rom 5 in a full edition. I have Nero 6 in the express edition which doesn't give the option of adding the boot (.img) file. I thought I had it in V.5, but couldn't get it to work.
I'm pissed now, so I'll hang it up for awhile. I'm also working with an old Iwill board with Raid that doesn't want to access the striped disks. I better do some reading. Thanks all. |

You will have to use the original link and WinISO.

Yea! I got it. I used the original link to make the new slipstreamed i386 file. I used isobuster to extract the .img file. I then used DeepBurner Free to create an ISO containing the above and all the rest of the files on my old W2K disk. DeepBurner then burned the new ISO file.
Now all I have to do is get it installed on my Raid-0 disks. |

Stupid Question
In windows 2000 Pro Don't you have to install service packs 1 through 3 prior to installing SP4? Same for XP with SP1 and SP2?
